How Often Should You Check for Pests in Your Apartment Complex?

Unlike restaurants, banks, and schools, there are no days off at an apartment complex. Tenants have wants and needs every day of the week, and property managers can’t afford to have anything put a stint in their 24-hour operations. With no spare time to waste on a pest infestation, many of them have a similar worry: “How often do I need to check for pests in my apartment complex?” The answer for each apartment manager, however, depends on the specific living conditions of their community.

When to Schedule Inspections

The dates in which you should schedule your inspections will vary due to a few features of your apartment complex, including:

  • Pet-Friendly Units

There’s no need to admonish your pet-friendly renting policies, but there is a need to crack down on wildlife management if you have them. Because pet waste and pet food around your community can attract wild animals, it’s essential that you allow less time in between your wildlife inspections.

  • A History of Pests

If you’ve never had a pest problem, you could safely count on quarterly or even bi-annual inspections; however, if pests have compromised your apartment building in the past, you should consider a more frequent round of wildlife inspections. Although a proper critter professional can repair entry points around your unit and protect it from reentry, you could still have nearby animals willing to make an effort at breaking in.

  • The Age of Your Building

Because older buildings are fortified with older materials, they’re more susceptible to a pest infestation. Animals like rats, mice, and squirrels can chew through brand-new buildings, which makes those with age an even easier target. Depending on the age of your apartment complex, you may need to schedule inspections more frequently than you think.

Where to Check for Wildlife

When heading out to inspect your apartment community for pests, these are the places you’ll certainly want to check.

  • Windows and doorframes
  • Attics and crawl spaces
  • Unit foundations
  • Areas of the rooftop, including soffits, gutters, and chimneys
  • Apartment gardens and parks
